BMW Z1

The BMW Z1 is the first model in the line BMW Z series roadsters, and was released in limited quantities in the period from 1989 to 1991.
In Z1 is unique to plastic body panels and vertically sliding doors, which fall in the door sills. This is one of the first BMW to use a multi-link rear suspension. The only specification powertrain is a 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine and 5 speed manual transmission from the E30 325i.
In 1996 z1s successor, commercially Z3 began production.

1. Development and launch. (Разработка и запуск)
In early 1985, BMW created a division called BMW Technik GmbH the development of concepts for new vehicles and technologies. The Director of BMW Technik GmbH was Ulrich bez, who oversaw the development of the z1s. The project management was transferred Klaus Faust when bez left BMW in October 1988. The leading designer was harm Lagaay.
In August 1985, the BMW Board has approved for further development of the first concept car of BMW technology in the P1. A year later, the first road prototype was produced and BMW has publicly revealed project. Model coupe was also the subject of the study design, but did not reach production.
In early 1987, BMW announced that it will enter Z1 into production in September 1987, the form of production Z1 was presented at the Frankfurt motor show. Production began in October 1988. The original target price was 80.000 DM, but by the time production began, the base price had risen to DM 83.000.

2. Door. (Дверь)
Doors are unique in that they retract vertically, instead of the traditional designs that swing out or up, the First car with a sliding door was in a 1954 Kaiser Darrin, although such doors moving forward not down. The body with its high sills, offers crash protection independent of the doors, and possibly, though perhaps not right in some countries for Z1 to operate with the door lowered.
Windows can be managed independently from the doors, although they move automatically when the door is lowered. As Windows and doors are actuated by electric motors through toothed rubber belts and may be moved manually in an emergency.

3. Body. (Тело)
In addition to the unique design of the door, Z1 in case there were several other innovations: removable plastic body panels, flat pan, roll Hoop built into the windscreen surround and continuously zinc welded seams.
Side panels and doors are made from GES Xenoy thermoplastic. The hood, trunk and roof components made of fiberglass, made Seger Hoffman AG. The car is painted in a special flexible lacquer, developed jointly by AKZO coatings and BMW Technik GmbH. During the z1s launch, BMW suggested that owners purchase an additional set of body panels and change the color of the car from time to time. A car with front-wheel drive with all the panels completely removed, similar to the Pontiac Fiero. BMW noted that the body can be completely replaced in 40 minutes, although Z1 owners have reported that this may be very optimistic.
Aerodynamics were at the center of the vehicle design. In a flat plastic pan used for ground effect aerodynamics and rear bumper - in combination with the aerodynamic shape of the silencer forms a diffuser to reduce rear lift. The front end reportedly induces a high pressure zone in front of the front wheels to increase front-wheel traction. In Z1 has a drag coefficient of 0.36 C, and D with the top up or 0.43 D him down.

4. Suspension. (Подвеска)
Rear suspension, called the Z axle, was specially designed for the Z1. He was one of the first BMWs to feature a multi-link design. In the 1990-ies, S bridge will be used on the various BMW group vehicles, including the E36 3 series and the R40 Rover 75.
As the front suspension on the E30 325i. Wheel similar to the E30 325i, which is a 15-inch-380mm diameter x 7 inch width 180 mm on the front and the rear, equipped with 205 / 55VR-15 tires.

5. Transmission. (Передача)
The only configuration powertrain is a 2.5-liter M20) inline six-cylinder engine and five-speed Getrag 260 / 5 manual transmission, is produced in the E30 325i. Engine 152 2.494 CC CU in SOHC inline six-cylinder engine that produces 125 kW 168 HP at 5.800 rpm and 222 N * m 164 lb⋅ft of torque.
The engine sits tilted 20 degrees to the right to accommodate the low hoodline.

6. Z Series. (Серия Z)
For Z in Z1 originally stood for Zukunft, the German word for the future. Later cars in the series Z Z3, Z4 and Z8, which was available as a 2-seater convertible, however some models were also available as 2-seater coupe.

7. Production. (Производство)
In Z1 was produced from March 1989 to June 1991, all at the BMW plant in Munich, was issued 8.000 cars. All the cars were left-hand drive, and most 6.443 were sold in BMWs native German market. The country to the second-greatest number of z1s, Italy, received less than 7% of the total volume sold on the domestic market. BMW Z1 vehicles officially imported to France for sale there are yellow lights instead of the clarity found elsewhere.
The initial demand was strong, with BMW taking orders for 3.500 cars before the production began. However, demand dropped significantly around 1988 and BMW ended production in 1991. There is speculation that the drop in demand was due to the early inflated demand from speculative investors. However, in 1988, BMW was quoted as saying that they are of 35.000 orders for the Z1.
BMW is reportedly no need to build every day more than 10-20 Z1 means. More than half of all vehicles Z1 in particular, 4.091 were produced for the 1990 model year. Seventy-eight P1 funds were reportedly used as test mules, although most were later sold without a warranty and, presumably, at a lower price. None of the Z1 vehicles sold with air conditioning. The dashboard of cars is very small and no space for heat and cooling.
In Z1 was available in six exterior colors and four interior colors. Red-the most common body color. Most 6.177 was red, black, or green with dark grey interior. Light yellow exterior fun-Gelb in German or fun yellow in English, 133 examples made or red 38 examples made of the rarest Z1 colors. Color: pool blue and so orange was reserved for the designers of the car, Ulrich bez and harm Lagaay.

8. Film and television appearances. (Фильм и телевизионные выступления)
In Z1 was shown in the episode of Wheeler dealers in 2014. They bought the car as a non-standard yellow and returned the car back to red. It was noted that BMW said removable panels may be removed after 40 minutes, but actually took six hours.
BMW Z1 also had a very small part in the Jackie Chan film, Armour of God II: Operation Condor.
